Blood Sugar Unit Converter: mg/dL ↔ mmol/L ↔ g/L
Half the gestational diabetes advice you will find is written in a unit your meter does not use. Type your number in below and get it in the other two units straight away — along with something no ordinary converter gives you: whether that number is above or below the targets used in pregnancy.
To convert mg/dL to mmol/L, divide by 18.0182. To go the other way, multiply mmol/L by 18.0182. French readings in g/L are simply mg/dL divided by 100, so 0.95 g/L, 95 mg/dL and 5.3 mmol/L are all the same measurement written three ways. Rounding to 18 instead of 18.0182 is fine for mental arithmetic — it shifts a typical pregnancy reading by less than 0.02 mmol/L.

The formula, in full
There is no clever part. Glucose has a molar mass of about 180.16 g/mol, which makes one mmol/L equal to 18.0182 mg/dL — that single number does all four conversions below.
mg/dL → mmol/L
mmol/L = mg/dL ÷ 18.0182
For example: 95 mg/dL is 5.3 mmol/L.
mmol/L → mg/dL
mg/dL = mmol/L × 18.0182
For example: 5.3 mmol/L is 95 mg/dL.
mg/dL → g/L
g/L = mg/dL ÷ 100
For example: 95 mg/dL is 0.95 g/L.
g/L → mmol/L
mmol/L = g/L × 100 ÷ 18.0182
For example: 0.95 g/L is 5.3 mmol/L.
Most published tables round the factor to 18, and some to 18.02. Across the whole range of pregnancy readings the difference is under 0.02 mmol/L, which is smaller than the error of any home meter — so if you divide by 18 in your head, you are not doing it wrong. This tool uses 18.0182 throughout, including for the targets it compares your number against.
Which country uses which unit
This is the reason the internet appears to contradict itself about gestational diabetes. Every guideline below sets essentially the same fasting target — they just write it in the unit their own clinicians use.

The diagnostic thresholds come from the glucose tolerance test that gives the diagnosis and are much higher than the daily targets, because you drank a measured glucose load for them. Reading an OGTT result against a daily target is the most common way to frighten yourself unnecessarily on this subject.

Whatever you type is converted to mg/dL first, and everything else is derived from that single value. It means the three answers can never disagree with each other by a rounding step, and that converting back and forth returns you to where you started.

If you type 5.4 and then switch from mg/dL to mmol/L, you get 5.4 mmol/L — not 0.3. On this tool the digits are the question and the unit is part of asking it, which is the opposite of how the reading checker behaves, and right for each.

How do you convert mg/dL to mmol/L?
Divide by 18.0182. So 95 mg/dL ÷ 18.0182 = 5.3 mmol/L, and 140 mg/dL ÷ 18.0182 = 7.8 mmol/L. To go the other way, multiply: 5.3 mmol/L × 18.0182 = 95 mg/dL. Dividing or multiplying by a flat 18 in your head gets you within 0.02 mmol/L, which is well inside the accuracy of any home meter.
Why does 18.0182 appear in the formula?
Because it converts a weight per volume into a count of molecules per volume. Glucose has a molar mass of roughly 180.16 g/mol, so 1 mmol of glucose weighs about 180.16 mg, which in a decilitre works out at 18.0182 mg/dL. mg/dL measures how much glucose is there by weight; mmol/L measures how many molecules are there. Same reality, two ways of counting it.
Which countries use mg/dL and which use mmol/L?
The United States, Spain, Germany, Italy, Japan, Brazil and much of the Middle East report in mg/dL. The UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and the Netherlands use mmol/L. France is the outlier and reports in g/L, which is just mg/dL divided by 100. If you are reading gestational diabetes advice from another country, the numbers will look wrong until you convert them.
What is 5.3 mmol/L in mg/dL?
5.3 mmol/L is 95 mg/dL, or 0.95 g/L. It is a number worth knowing, because it is the fasting target in the NICE guideline used in the UK and, written as 95 mg/dL, the fasting target in the ADA and ACOG guidance used in the US. The two countries publish what looks like different advice and it is the same target.
What is 7.8 mmol/L in mg/dL?
7.8 mmol/L is 140 mg/dL, or 1.4 g/L. It is the one-hour post-meal target under NICE and Diabetes Canada, the same target written as 140 mg/dL by the ADA and ACOG, and — confusingly — also the two-hour diagnostic threshold in the NICE glucose tolerance test. Which one applies depends entirely on which test you are reading.
My meter shows 5.4 but the article says 97. Is something wrong?
No — those are the same reading. 5.4 mmol/L is 97 mg/dL. Meters are sold configured for the country they are sold in, and most cannot be switched. If the numbers you are reading are consistently about eighteen times bigger or smaller than yours, that is the unit difference and nothing else.
Is g/L the same as mg/dL?
It is the same scale, moved by a factor of 100. 0.95 g/L is 95 mg/dL and 1.40 g/L is 140 mg/dL. French meters and French clinical guidance report in g/L, which is why a French reading looks alarmingly small next to an American one. Typing a g/L value into a converter set to mg/dL is one of the easiest and most frightening mistakes to make, which is why this tool watches for it.
Should I convert my readings before writing them in my diary?
No — write down what your meter shows, in the unit it shows it in, and tell your team which unit that is. Converting by hand every day introduces errors and makes your record harder for a midwife to read at a glance. Convert when you are reading advice from another country, not when you are recording your own numbers.
