Mustard for Gestational Diabetes
Mustard is a popular condiment made from the seeds of the mustard plant, which belongs to the Brassicaceae family alongside broccoli and cabbage. Its characteristic pungent flavor comes from compounds like isothiocyanates, released when the seeds are crushed and mixed with a liquid. There are many varieties, including mild yellow mustard, sharp Dijon, and textured whole-grain mustard, each offering a unique taste profile. For centuries, it has been used not only to flavor foods but also for its potential medicinal properties, making it a versatile and historic ingredient in global cuisine.

9.2gIs Mustard safe with gestational diabetes?
Mustard is an excellent condiment choice for managing gestational diabetes because it is virtually free of carbohydrates and sugar. It allows you to add significant flavor to meals without impacting blood glucose levels, which is a primary goal of the GD diet. However, it is critical to read labels carefully, as many commercially prepared mustards, especially honey mustard or sweet-hot varieties, can contain substantial amounts of added sugar. Stick to traditional yellow, Dijon, or whole-grain mustards with clean ingredient lists for the best results.
How does Mustard affect blood sugar during pregnancy?
The glycemic index of plain mustard is negligible, meaning it does not cause a rise in blood sugar. In fact, the vinegar present in most prepared mustards may have a beneficial effect, as some studies suggest it can help blunt the glycemic response of a meal. The main concern is not the mustard itself but the other ingredients it may contain, such as hidden sugars or starches. Therefore, its impact is almost entirely dependent on choosing the right product and being mindful of what foods you are pairing it with.
What is a safe portion of Mustard for gestational diabetes?
A generous portion, such as one to two tablespoons, is perfectly acceptable for a gestational diabetes diet. This amount provides ample flavor for a sandwich or a piece of meat without contributing any significant carbohydrates or sugar. The primary limiting factor for mustard is its high sodium content, not its effect on blood sugar. Therefore, while you don't need to worry about it from a glucose perspective, moderation is still wise for overall cardiovascular health and fluid balance during pregnancy. Always check the nutrition label for sodium.
How should I combine Mustard to manage blood sugar during pregnancy?
Use mustard as a flavorful, low-carb condiment for lean protein sources like grilled chicken breast, fish, or turkey burgers to create a satisfying meal. It can be whisked with olive oil and lemon juice to make a simple vinaigrette for a large salad loaded with non-starchy vegetables and a protein source. Avoid pairing mustard with high-glycemic foods like white bread, pretzels, or sugary sauces. Instead, use it on whole-grain crackers with cheese or as a dip for raw vegetables like bell peppers and cucumbers for a blood-sugar-friendly snack.

Important Safety Information
Every pregnancy is different, and gestational diabetes is managed differently depending on your readings, your medication and how far along you are. The ratings and portions on this page are general information — not a diagnosis, a treatment plan or a medical device — and they cannot see your results.
- Low blood sugar:
- If you take insulin or diabetes medication, eating less carbohydrate than your team planned for can push your blood sugar too low. Treat a reading below 70 mg/dL (3.9 mmol/L), or symptoms such as shaking, sweating, confusion or a racing heart, with fast-acting carbohydrate immediately and retest after 15 minutes. Never use this page as a reason to skip or shrink a meal you were told to eat.
- Carbohydrate and ketones:
- Cutting carbohydrate hard to force a number down is not safe in pregnancy — it can produce ketones. Published guidance sets a minimum of 175 g of carbohydrate per day in pregnancy. Readings that stay above target for several days need your care team, not a smaller portion.
- Medication and insulin:
- The portions here are generic and know nothing about your insulin doses, your metformin, or the steroids given to mature your baby's lungs — all of which change how a meal affects you. Never adjust a dose or a mealtime based on this page.
- Food safety in pregnancy:
- Blood sugar is not the only thing that makes a food suitable while you are pregnant. Some foods with excellent glycemic numbers still carry mercury, vitamin A, listeria or alcohol risks, and those are judged separately from the ratings shown here. Check your national pregnancy food-safety guidance before adding an unfamiliar food.
- What these ratings can and cannot tell you:
- Glycemic index values, impact ratings and maximum servings are population averages taken from published tables. Two people eating the same food can get very different readings, so your own meter is the only measurement that describes you. Nutrition figures are indicative per 100 g and vary with brand, ripeness and preparation.
Contact your care team the same day if: your readings stay above target for several days; you have a reading below 54 mg/dL (3.0 mmol/L) or needed someone else's help to treat a low; you test positive for ketones; or your baby is moving less than usual. Seek emergency care for confusion, fainting, repeated vomiting, or a low you cannot bring back up.
